Sur Del Lago is the name given to the cocoa beans grown around Lake Maracaibo in northern Venezuela and is often cited as one of the oldest cacao growing areas of anywhere. What is interesting is that whilst the village of Chuao and others extol the virtues of genetically pure cacao (it's doubtful if this actually exists any more , the Sur Del Lago region has witnessed a very great level of cross-pollination and hence the chocolate from this region isn't as distinctive as many others in the north-eastern part of the subcontinent. The aroma is rich with red fruits and pepper whilst the finish is perfect with a delightful embossing. The melt is slow and consistent and has a very dry, acidic flavour that may be too intense for some.
